Captain's Quarters

My gadget setups

I love watching all kinds off "show off your rig" threads on various forums, as it's both fun and it gives me ideas. i also love taking such shots myself, as frankly there isn't much else to photograph around these parts. Here are some shots of my gadget setups, feel free to steal any ideas you find useful.

TV setup

I spend a lot of time in front of this thing. It's not the most expensive around, but it does what it's supposed to do. There's a Tatung 32" HDTV, a Phillips DVP5960 dvd player with a USB memory card reader and 4GB SD card reader for xvids and such, a PlayStation 2, a PSP, my beloved Cowon D2 and Sennheiser PX100 headphones, Creative Intrigue 3330 speakers (moved there for the pic, normally out on the side), some cheap Altec Lansing speakers (now serving in the bed setup), a pair of Sennheiser RS130 wireless headphones (normally located on their charge stand/transmitter outside the picture frame), and lastly my DIY audio switch for switching between audio input and outputs without replugging any cables.

Computer setup

Creative T10 speakers, Logitech mm28 as extra treble (and the I-trigue 3330's not visible woofer as extra bass), used for music mostly. Also in the pic is the D2, cellphone (SE k550i) and Nokia N800 internet tablet <3

Bed rig

My place of Zen, aka "bed". A DealExtreme $8 windshield mount screwed on a wooden plate (for counterweight) is holding whatever screen (PSP/D2/N800) I'm watching at an angle, while the Altec Lansing speakers that the T10 replaced provides sound. Also made a quick U2 dock from poster tack, parts of a flashlight and a mini USB connector so I can use the U2's alarm clock function with the speakers.

School rig

I got a 15,1" laptop that I used to drag to school every day, and it was a hassle. It's too big and too clumpy to carry around everywhere when all I need is web browser, msn, gtalk and IRC. So when there was a sale after christmas, I bought a Nokia N800 internet tablet (read review here - be warned that the new OS2008 has upgraded the device significantly!). The N800 has two SDHC slots, which in my case holds a 8GB SDHC card for random files and a 16GB SDHC card for media files. I also got the iGo Stowaway portable bluetooth keyboard and a pair of Sennheiser CX300 for listening without disturbing the people who actually pay attention.

Home DAP rig

Even though they are portable cans, I used the PX100 as home phones for a looong time, until I upgraded. I now use Beyerdynamic DT770 with the Cowon D2, and either the modified X5 dock or my old DIY, the D2 jukebox.

Portable DAP rigs

Got some AKG K518DJ headphones and cut the wire to 125 cm, and since this pic was taken they also got some nice velour pads to improve comfort. Sources are Sansa Clip and Cowon U2, both of which are excellent players.

Charging

With lots of gadgets, comes lots of chargers - which is a pain in the ass to carry around. So, I made my own travel pack which can charge pretty much everything I have either from AC outlet, car cigarette outlet, or from batteries. For anyone interested, here are links to the different chargers:
Soshine two way charger - Charges USB devices from 4 AAA batteries. Also work the other way to charge rechargable AAAs.
Rechargable batteries for the charger - 900mAh rechargeable batteries for use with the Soshine charger mentioned above.
USB AC charger - Charges USB devices form the AC outlet, available for several regions.
USB car adapter - Lets you charge USB devices from car cigarette outlets.
